Cori, our lead Ambassador, created this Topic for newcomers to get used to posting. A Topic is a fancy word for a forum posting. If you’re new here it’s a great place to start!
Here are a of questions to get the ball rolling:
1 . How did you find our forum?
2. What type of site are you working on?
I found(ed) this forum because when we search for common WordPress questions in Google we should get direct answers – not experts rambling or talking down to us. We needed something to help our learning process and collaborate as beginners in WordPress, which has always been dubbed a very collaborative environment. I’m working on 2-3 demo sites for YouTube tutorials, dearblogger.org as a personal blog, and am also improving this website regularly.
I promise you’ll find the following here:
- Simple answers to common blog and website questions
- Likely-minded bloggers and website owners
- Maybe a touch of comedy
Though my comedy career is mainly just borrowed from funny jokes on the internet. The first two, however, you can count on.
Talk to ya soon, – G
My website is a thematic mess.
When you visit my home page, you see a default WordPress theme. When you click on a post, the problems begin.
The themes I used when I wrote the post seem to be married to the content. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see the theme’s name.
Someone suggested I go into cpanel and access the file manager icon. I went to cpanel. I don’t see a file manager icon.
This is really holding me back. I don’t want to post while my website looks like it’s been hit by a theme tornado.
If you can help me fix this, fantastic. Otherwise, that self hosted blogger site I dumped, while ugly, was a lot cleaner when you change themes.6 months, 1 week ago chuff625Participant
New here and somewhat still novice with WordPress. I recently decided to start a freelance web design/ admin job on the side and build out websites for clients.
I don’t have a site (yet) but hopefully you can answer my question.
I watched your video on how to make an e-commerce site and was the most helpful in terms of the process. I have a client lined up that wants to be able to let his customers order from an online menu (a new local restaurant) for carry out. However, how do I let him be in charge of adding his menu items, prices, etc on his own without having to have me do it? Is there a way I can let him control that aspect of the site, even though I will be managing the overall site in the background for him? His menu items could change frequently and I don’t want to manage that portion of the site if possible.
Thanks for your feedback!6 months, 1 week ago gnarayanKeymaster
I’d probably just sit down with him and explain how to add menu items in WordPress and how to add products. Don’t need any code of course. Then you can see his results and fix them up if needed. That feels like the shortest path to success here and I find clients like knowing a bit about the site (without full responsibility).
Greg, your videos have been extremely helpful to me. Thank you.
I am a first generation web-designer (old man now). Started off doing html in Notepad. I left the trade for many years. Thought I’d step back into it seamlessly – not so. Learning from the ground up. Sure, some basic understanding of HTML and CSS, but essentially bupkiss.
I have an old Costa Rica real estate blog (WordPress) as well as a community website I started in 2002 (used to be Drupal, switched over to WordPress) for an area where I live remotely in Costa Rica. Despite the latter being essentially abandoned for a number of years, it still ranks well. I’m turning my attention back to it and intend to lean heavily on you young guys who do this stuff in your sleep.
I’ve got a question about one of your videos, but I’ll look around and see where to post it. I suspect that the “Say Hello” forum isn’t the place.
Thanks again. I look forward to learning more.

Here is a great place to questions too. I’d be honored to be the young guy who brings you up to speed in WordPress 🙂
Costa Rica is the best, I miss it, lived in Cariari in San Jose from 1993-1996.
You have more of the skills needed from the Notebad, HTML, CSS, Drupal, skills like problem solving, than you might think. Nowadays it really is about finding a way to do things a little bit differently, building a small amount of momentum into a large audience, and then just communicating a lot and staying in publish mode at all times (even if your work stinks that day). Anyone can do it with the right mindset.

Just wanted to say ‘hello’ and thanks for running this forum. I’ve been enjoying Narayan’s excellent YouTube videos on the Sydney Theme. I recently decided to rebuild my website using WordPress and settled on this theme as the right one for me. I’ve run into an issue that I’d really appreciate some help with, concerning customizing my blog page layout (please see my other post in the Sydney Theme section.) I’ve just run out of ideas, trying to solve this one. It may be a case of resorting to modifying the CSS. While I know basic CSS, but I’ve never dabbled in modifying a WordPress theme before.
