Please Help! I am new to web hosting and confused about how SSL works and if it is essential for all WordPress sites. I recently created a WordPress site with GoDaddy Economy Web hosting. I have no plans to include an online store on this website, it will just be a source of information for customers to read about our products, so I did not think I needed SSL.
However, visitors are not able to view the site (www.heartandhands4u.com) without agreeing to a prompt that says our security certificate is invalid!
SSL certificates are not included in the GoDaddy Economy web hosting package, it is a $69/yr addition to the total price! That’s more than I paid for one year of Economy hosting!
I see that HostGator’s Hatchling plan does not include private SSL certificate, so if I were to switch HostGator as my host, would I have the same problem?
If I understand correctly, for some reason, when visitors type in heartandhands4u.com, they are forced to connect over an https connection, which then prompts the browser to alert the security warning, because I don’t have an SSL certificate. When I try to connect to heartandhands4u.com/wp-admin, it is also forcing the https connection, same problem! I have to agree to a security exception before logging in as an admin or just viewing the site as a visitor.
An update if anyone is interested…I switched to hosting with SiteGround, they are awesome!
Free support for a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate is included and they automatically set it up when migrating my site. No extra fee for migration or Let’s Encrypt support!
Now I can log in to my dashboard via https! Love it!
Is Private SSL essential for a basic WordPress site?
